The Tale Of Genji is regarded by many as the world’s first novel. As such, it’s kind of a big deal in Japan and elsewhere. It is the quintessential work of the Imperial Heian Court. I submit that it is another Heian work, one by Sei Shōnagon, which is more profound. That work is The Pillow Book and I invite each of you to lay your head upon it, allowing my voice to soak into your ear hole all the while.
